Meaning Behind Heavenly Junk

In 2015 we started out as Southern Treasures. After our 1st show at Junklahoma we learned that we could get in a lot of trouble with trademarks. So we quickly decided that we needed to change our name because someone already had our name trademarked in Oklahoma. A name just makes it real so we needed one fast. Like I heard one time 'A new business is like a new baby. Once you name it it feels real and you will treat it like a business.' So now here came the hard part. We wanted it to have Junk in the name because that is what we was selling. But we couldn't just call it "Junk" it needed something else. Hubby and I talked about it for a week or more. Every time we would come up with something it would be taken. Then we said we wanted God to be in our business so we both prayed and the hubby said 'Heavenly Junk' because our treasures are not here on earth they are up in Heaven. So I checked it and it wasn't taken. So Heavenly Junk it was.

Now we have played with logos since then but nothing has just jumped out at us. This is something we are just going to keep working on until God shows us that too.

Before every show we pray at our booth that we can help customers to show them what they can do with the junk, that we brought the right stuff for that show, and that we might be able to make enough money to pay the bills that need to be paid for that month. Putting God first not only in our business but in our marriage also helps Heavenly Junk be what it is today. In 2013 my husband and I had a HUGE fight. So much so that we almost got a divorce. I hate even talking about it because it was so bad but after that fight we pray every night together and it helps so much. That is why when we wanted to start this I wanted God to come first. We even try to do show near one of our churches so we could go to church on Sunday before coming home. It is tough to get up after a show but it makes a better week.

'But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:20-21

6 Tips I Learned From Pickin'

(#pickin'day is what I like to call our pickin' days! You will see this on our Facebook page when it is pickin' day.)

For the ones of you who want to start pickin' let me first tell you this is not for the faint at heart. It is hot, dirty, you will get hurt and hard. But if you don't mind all of that then you have to try it because it is so much fun. If that is something that doesn't sound fun at all then find the closes show and run there because that is the best place for you to pick. If you do go pickin' here is a few tips. (As I am writing this my hubby is in a field pickin' today!!)

#1 Cash Talks

The first and main tip I can give you when your pickin' is make sure you bring cash. When we are out we go all over and these places don't have a ATM close by to get the money out. Plus some don't' like checks from someone they don't know. Cash also sometimes helps the price of something because the seller walks away with cash and not a IOU. We always set a budget for every pick. Ok I do and tell the hubby $100 to $200 less then what it really is so we have money to pay bills with. (Man I hope he isn't reading this. LOL!!!) A budget is good just like it is when you go to the store to buy food. Now we always spend more because we never know what is out there until we start looking.

This is one of our honey holes!!
#2 Write it Down

I always bring a notebook to put the prices of the things we buy for two reasons. One to remember what price we put on something at the beginning of our pick to pay the seller at the end and two to know what I paid for it when I got home. Putting it on paper just helps everyone stay on the right page.

This is another post that you would see if we was out pickin'.

#3 Dress for the Job

If you are out in a field with flip flops on most likely you will break them or get hurt. I have been known to wear flip flops but after my feet hurt and are so dirty that 2 showers later they might be clean. So wear what my hubby calls real shoes. Shoes that you can climb piles of metal or go into barns that have dirt floors. The next thing I always have when I am pickin' is sunscreen or a jacket. During the summer here in Oklahoma you will get some sun (LOL) and I burn so sunscreen is a must. We have picked before a snow storm came in and it was so cold that I couldn't feel my toes. (Yes I was wearing real shoes.) So a jacket is in the truck at all times when it gets cold. Now don't' wear your nice clothes because there is always dirt, mud, dogs with muddy feet, rust, grease, and much more out there in those fields, barns, and garages. So don't where your Sunday best. I have went to look at some junk after church with a dress on and had to come back so I can dig in the dirt for a door or something.

This was a the first load of a full day of pickin'. It was very cold that day!!

This was from the last auction we went to.

#4 God Made Dirt, Dirt Won't Hurt.

So you can't be afraid to get a little dirty. Some of our best finds have been under dirt, in dirt or covered in dirt. There was one time I seen something at a yard sale that was catching my eye. It was a pile of old wood. I asked the guy if it was for sale and he said you can have anything you want. So I went through the pile. At the very bottom there was this piece that had some carving in it so I tried to pull it up and it wouldn't come out. I called for the hubby to come over and he said it looks like a door. I said "NO WAY!!" Sure enough I "dug" it out of 3 inches or more and it was a full good. After looking at it and having a carpenter friend look at it we learned it was very old and still in good shape. I turned it into a entry table and sold it.

This is the door I got out of the dirt!!

This is the scrap yard that we love to go to!!!

#5 "Put it in the Pile"

I love this one because it helps the budget which I am all about. Ask the sell if they do piles because sometimes you might get a good deal on a pile of 8 or 9 items then paying for each item. If you do this add up what you would give for each item and then subtract about $10 to $20 dollars and that is what you give for the whole pile. Now if the seller doesn't want to do that then that is ok too. Don't expect every seller to do that. If they are not really wanting to sell anything to begin with don't start with piles. If will scare them off. Wait about the 10th item or so until you get a feel of them and they get a feel of you. The seller is being nice by letting you pick their stuff so give them the respect that you would want someone to give you. **Now this is a side tip...If you are a seller don't expect the prices to be like they have on T.V. because they have the show backing them up and I can't give that kind of prices. If you are a buyer don't low ball a seller so much that you offend them. They want to make some kind of money on the item that they are selling.

This was from a few years ago at a yard sale I went to a lot!!

Just one of our many hauls!!!

#6 Have Some Fun

The last tip I have for you is to have fun! There is a lot of ways to go pickin'. you can go to an old farm, go to garage sales, go dumpster divin', go to a scrap yard, go to a store that is going out of business, or go to one of the many shows that is your area. However you pick always have fun doing it. Meet new people, hang out with some old friends, learn about the past, think outside the box, and have fun!!

I Love My Job!!

Tim's Top Tip for Pickin'!!!!

Buy Low, Sell High

If you are in the business of resale or just want a good deal it doesn't hurt to ask if they will go down a little. Now don;t go crazy with the asking and say a crazy low number. If they want $5 out of something don't ask if they can go to $1. That just hurts the rest of the buying. The worst they can say is "No."

Welcome

I would like to thank you for stopping by and learning a little about us. My name is Sarah and my husband's name is Tim. We are known as the Junk King and Queen or the owners of Heavenly Junk. We live in western Oklahoma in a small town called Cordell. We got married in 2009. God has not blessed us with children but we do have a sweet puppy, Hoss, who is about 6 years old now. My hubby owns his scrape iron business and I own a tag office. (Like a DMV for Oklahoma.) Then together we are a husband and wife team who sell junk at vintage/junk shows. That is right junk. Rusty, metal, funky, farm, car part junk. And that is just the start of what we sell.

About 2 years ago I seen a vintage/junk show in Oklahoma City and seen some of the stuff hubby hauls off selling there. I thought to my self what if we did that? So I signed up for a local craft show and took some junk and painted furniture to it. Let me tell you I almost sold out!! Came home to show my hubby all the money I had made and he thought I was crazy!!!

In June 2015 I took him to a show called Junk Hippy in OKC. I had seen pictures on Facebook of this show and knew that one day I wanted to sell at this show!!! (Which we now do!!!) When we drove into the fair grounds I seen this line that was really long and the doors had been open for 30 mins!!! There was women dressed in nice clothing with big jewelry and I can remember thinking these women are going to a junk show?? I was in a t-shirt and jeans with my hubby. (Who was the only man in line.) When we entered the door my heart was pounding out of my chest. You would have thought I just seen a famous actor or something. There was rust junk everywhere! My hubby starts over to a booth, looks at something and almost dropped it. I asked him "What's the problem?" He said "I get this all day long (for free) and can't get that price out of it if I scrapped it." I said "Do you think it is to much?" He said YES!! so loud that the owner of the booth looked at us. I then told my hubby to stand back and let's watch to see if anyone looks at it. Sure enough not two minuets later someone looked at it and headed over to the owner and paid the amount on the price tag. No questions!! Nothing!!! I thought my husband was going to die!!! We walked around a bit and met some vendors and asked them some questions about the show and what they sold. We never thought we would be at that level but thought of we could sell to vendors that would be awesome. Another husband and wife team (which are still our friends to this day) was there selling and we talked to them for a long time about the show and how they were doing there. They told us that we should try to get on the waiting list for the next show. I thought yeah right I just got the hubby to come to a show I highly fought I could get him to sell at a show. We finished walking around and even bought a few things. As we were on our way home we sat in silent!!! Then my hubby turned to me and said "So what do you think?" I said "I think there is a show in a few months." He said "Ok, see if you can get into it." So I applied for a show called Junklahoma in Piedmont, Ok that was in September 2015. And we got in!!!!

Sep 2015 came fast!!!! We picked and picked for that show!! (So pick or pickin' is where you go out in a field, barn, old house, etc. and find your junk or rusty gold!) As we were loading getting for the show I took some picture of our trailer and posted them to the event Facebook page. The last thing we loaded was a set of lockers. They were not pretty and very rusty but they were really cool!! On that post I had a few people ask me how much for the lockers and I had no idea how much for them or anything for that matter so I said I didn't know yet. The next morning we had to get a tire fixed (this is an on going thing in our world. Lol!!) so we went to the local farmers co-op. The guys there looked at our trailer and said "Oh, Tim you are hauling another load off today?" The hubby said " No going to a craft show." They gave us the weirdest look and just changed the tire. I got out of the truck and headed to the back of the trailer and took a quick picture and post it again to the Facebook event page for the show.

The promoter of the show loved that picture so much that now uses it for promoting the show to this date. It is the true meaning of junkin'!!! When we got to the show and started to unload the first thing that came off was those lockers. Somebody came up and asked "How much for the lockers and this tractor grill?" I said "$75 for the lockers and $20 for the grill." She said "Sold here is the cash." Then the promoter came up and asked how much for some chairs? I gave her a price she said sold and handed me the money. That whole show was like that.

 Before the show

 Before the show

 Before the show

After the show

We had no idea how to set up a booth, what to price stuff, or how to sell "Junk." But we prayed over that booth and asked God to help us sell and He sure did!!!

Since that day we have learned so much. Some on our own and some from others. With this blog I hope to show and tell you all of it from pickin' to shows, from setup to tear down, to decoration in a booth or in your house I hope to cover it all.

Happy Pickin'
